Yorkshire Sculpture Park

History, culture and the arts

If you are a history buff, York and the county of Yorkshire is the right place for you. For a dose of history, nature and art, I can wholeheartedly recommend a day trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Hepworth Wakefield Gallery.

In York, you can find a range of exciting museums including the National Railway Museum, one of my favorites, and the York Art Gallery with seasonal exhibitions and its own art collection. York also boasts of many small galleries which are worth visiting, just google them and they will pop up.

Cycling

For those who know me, it comes as no surprise that my love for York and the surrounding countryside is connected to cycling. I am telling you- the opportunities for road, gravel and mountain biking are out of this world. Within 5 minutes on the saddle, you are already in the countryside. It is that easy. Then, an endless number of routes to choose from around the beautiful countryside, rolling hills and small villages where you can stop for refreshments.

For those who are into mountain biking or want to give it a go, you have at least three options to choose from, all within one hour drive away from York. These offer routes suitable for all levels (beginners to advanced) and if you don’t want to bring your own bike, you can always rent one to suit your ability.

As a cycle friendly city, York is very easy to get around. Bikes and e-scooters can be picked up for hire from multiple points in the city and if you fancy an organised cycling tour around York they are both popular and are highly recommended. Please make sure you book these in advance.

Playing golf in York

Golf

Golf can be traced to medieval times in Scotland. Since then, it has spread across the whole of the UK. Seriously, golf courses are everywhere in the UK, with at least two in York, one within walking distance from the Backyard and the other in Fulford (Fulford Golf Club) only 10 minutes drive away.

Visitors are welcome on both courses. Heworth Golf Club is small and accessible, the other is one of the best courses in the country. You can also hire all the equipment there. Other courses are within easy car reach.

If you are visiting York, you can visit the golf courses for a day or simply turn this into a golf trip and stay at the Backyard.

Walking

Walking and hiking can easily be regarded as a national sport. The stunning countryside and mild weather mean that you can enjoy walking all year around (providing that you have waterproofs and boots).

I can easily picture Queen Elisabeth strolling down a hill with a walking stick and a dog on her side, wearing her tweet and Hunter's boots. However, I never thought I would enjoy country walks, let alone in the company of a dog, but here you go.

Whether you fancy a stroll around beautiful gardens, explore castles and their grounds, or opt for a more demanding hike on the Mores or along the coastline, the choice is yours.

You don’t need a car to enjoy the countryside, simply hop on a bus or take the coach. A popular all day tour includes a bus journey with the Coastliner (stops practically on our doorstep) and head out to the Moors, then walk down to the coastline and take Coastliner back in the evening. Wonderful!

Dipping into the sea in York

Dipping into the sea

Taking a sea bath is easy, it's only about an hour's drive to the formidable North Sea coastline.

Apart from dipping into the sea or sunbathing in such a wood, the towns such as Scarborough, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay are something that can be safely recommended to visit.
